What is SLIC's mission?
Does SLIC want to stop the remodel of the Lloyd Center?
No. We support meaningful development, including more housing. Our goal is to ensure that redevelopment occurs thoughtfully, in collaboration, and with an eye toward community use.
Why not just go to one of the surrounding rinks?
Other rinks in the area are less accessible for Portland skaters in terms of cost, location/transit, and scheduling. And we have an established and growing community of coaches, staff, and hundreds of regular skaters taking lessons and keeping our rink busy 7 days a week; it's not possible to just pack up and merge with another busy facility.
The closure date is set. Isn't it too late?
We have filed an appeal with the city because we believe the master plan as approved leaves out a few key details. [Details of legal argument here.] Our hope is that it is not too late to work with the city and developers to identify a solution that keeps skating accessible in the Lloyd district or at least within the city of Portland.
Why not just build a new rink?
We are exploring all options! It depends on a lot of factors including the funding we are able to identify, partnerships we are able to build, and connections we're able to make with those interested in keeping a rink in Portland. This is a huge project and will take a significant amount of time and community effort to succeed.
Who's going to pay for a new rink?
We are in the process of starting up a new 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization called the Bridgetown Ice Skating Collective. Our funding model will allow us to pursue a variety of funding sources. Funders have begun to express interest; we will also need your help to raise the funds for our next Portland rink.
